We are a creative homeschooling family of 3. I have homeschooled my 2 boys from the start and we do lots of unit studies and get out into our beautiful part of the world as often as we can.
As the boys are getting older and we are getting busier I find I am posting less about our journey but will continue to update occasionally.

Week 5 Waterbirds

Better blogging late than never-
We have been so busy, living, learning and laughing.

The boys are doing Math-U-See on the banks of the Clarence River at Lillydale,
We had a baby honey eater in the trees up above us calling for Mum and Dad all day who kept flying in with snacks. Baby birds seem to be just like little boys, always hungry and very vocal about it.

What a studious pair of boys!
such focus and concentration.

We also had a lovely field trip out to Ashby, further down the Clarence and
we saw some beautiful baby black swans

and learnt a new word
~cygnets~

Mr10, getting in close for a good look.

We also saw some pelicans

Had a lovely visit from a cheeky baby magpie.

Saw some pretty wallabies in the trees.

I have been wanting to try some felting,

So Mr6 and I made a wet felted nest
and I needle felted in the loose ends.

He chose the colours, using some dyed fleece and some spun wool and laid it out over a big stainless mixing bowl.
Then he covered it with a bigger bowl, turned it up the other way

We wet it with hot water and liquid hand soap
and we both rubbed it with a plastic shopping bag over our hands.

Once it was dry, Mr6 wanted it to hold some eggs

These days it lives on his top shelf and houses his ever growing rock collection and has a bird he made 'sitting' on the nest.
Mr6 has also been having little chats with our chooks in the mornings about them please going clucky so he can have some baby chickens.

Birds, especially nests and eggs are a fabulous topic to do with a little person in spring, he is getting so much delight with the whole spring, new life, eggs, chicks, baby animals every where, and through his eyes, we can share the joys of this wonderful time of the year. He is also taking great delight in seeds sprouting and new growth on plants.
He is also growing up so fast and in doing so reminding his Mummy how fast they grow up and how fleeting and precious these younger years are.
This is a stretched canvas Mr6 has gessoed and stuck on old jigsaw pieces to do a painting on.

I love your nest. I want to make one of those.

You can make felted eggs by getting a plastic egg, put wool all over it, felt it then cut out the egg.

You can make a little chick or put a little rock in it. :) My kids had a great time doing this.

In our new place, we have this very tame magpie who is very cute. I have almost stepped on him/her when I've been hanging out washing. It walks around us. Lou tried catching it - I think he thinks it is a chicken. It only comes on the ground now when Lou is not around.:)

Thanks Anne,

I have been thinking of doing some eggs with the boys but was thinking of making them solid, so your idea sounds lovely.

Your magpie sounds gorgeous, as does your loopity Lou.
